Cliffside Line relaying

February 2016

We relaid the Cliffside line as some of the rail getting badly worn and wooden sleepers laid when we built the dual gauge section had become less than supportive.

The line was removed right back to the dual gauge point and the connection across the passenger line.

Better, though not necessarily new sleepers were put in place

Replacement rails were brought down from our storage area.

A bit later, this was the view looking down the hill. The V-skip is standing just above the end of the dual gauge (2ft and 3ft 2¼in) section. Some persuasion using the Jim Crow had to be applied as the rail we used was not dead straight.

This was the scene on 3 April.

Sleepers here are being aligned and levelled ready for the next lengths of replacement rail.

All that effort just to extend a measuring tape!

View from below. We used new ballast (we didn't have any old stuff!). Hopefully drainage will be much improved and the sleepers last for some time.

Progress a few days later - more levelling and gauging about to be carried out before the new track is connected to the existing at the top of the gradient.

One of our Hudson Hunslets pushes some skips of rubbish up the relaid line. Note the dual gauge track at this point
