Alpha Cement Wagons Acquired
January 2010

The Museum has recently purchased two additional wagons formerly used at the Alpha Cement works at Cliffe at Hoo, Kent. One of these tipper wagons is already in the collection awaiting restoration (which is planned to start this year) and, of course, Peldon, the Fowler diesel locomotive also worked there. The acquired wagons have been highly modified by their previous owner and we will need to consider very carefully how these are restored as they appear far from complete. The wagons were acquired via Alan Keef at Ross-on-Wye.

The two wagons were tripped to the works yard of one of our volunteers, in Bishops Waltham in Hampshire.

They were collected by the Railgroup using the Museum's 4-weeled trailer .....

..... and ramped onto Redcar Sidings.

The two wagons on Redcar Sidings shortly after delivery.

With regard to the modifications, the tipping decks have been lowered onto and secured to the frames and other parts reused in different positions to convert them into a flat, fixed bed wagon.

The deal included two spare wheelsets, several axle boxes and some odd bits and pieces. Fortunately they both had a full complement of coupling pins - always an advantage.
